Hajnali háztetők #1

I borrowed the title from a Hungarian movie Hajnali háztetők (Roofs at Dawn).
A Hajnali háztetők címet egy magyar filmtől kölcsönöztem.

These days I just can't sleep for some reason (those friends who read my private blog on Facebook or MySpace know why...) and this morning I woke up around 5 o'clock, which is not normal for a Sunday, is it?
Ezekben a napokban valahogy nem tudok aludni (azok a barátaim, akik olvassák a privát blogomat a Facebookon vagy a MySpace-en, tudják, miért...), és ma reggel 5 körül ébredtem, ami nem normális dolog egy vasárnap, nemde?

I was thinking about going out for a walk, to catch some nice moments of these early hours, but was too tired for that. So I just looked out of the window and saw the Sun rising above the roofs. I am staying now in a loft apartment, and the only view I have is some roofs, including the Hotel Royal.
Gondoltam arra, hogy elmenjek sétálni egyet, és elkapjak pár szép kora reggeli pillanatot, de túl fáradt voltam. Így hát csak kinéztem az ablakon, és a Nap éppen akkor emelkedett a tetők fölé. Egy tetőtéri lakásban lakom; egyetlen kilátás néhány háztetőre esik, köztük a Royal Szállodáéra.

Music Academy

I love this place where I am living right now for these couple of months! The Music Academy is just around the corner which means music and its spirit fills the air.
Imádom ezt a helyet, ahol most ebben a pár hónapban lakom! A Zeneakadémia pont itt van a sarkon, ami azt jelenti, hogy zene és a szelleme tölti be a levegőt.

Can you imagine: you simply go down to buy your bread or catch a tram and you have to pass a beautiful building, bump into young boys and girls all the time, carrying their instruments, and hear a mixture of vibrating sounds from pianos, clarinets, violins, a scale here, an aria there... Wonderful!
El tudod képzelni? Egyszerűen lemész kenyeret venni, vagy a villamoshoz, és el kell menned egy gyönyörű épület előtt, állandóan a hangszereiket cipelő fiatal fiúkba és lányokba ütközöl, és vibráló hangok keverékét hallod: zongorákból, klarinétokból, hegedűkből, egy skála itt, egy ária ott... Csodálatos!

Officially it is not called Music Academy but it would translate literally to Ferenc Liszt University of Musical Arts, which doesn't make too much sense for me, because everybody is calling it Music Academy anyway, even on their website, but certainly they had some reason to change it.
Hivatalosan nem Zeneakadémiának hívják, hanem Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetemnek - aminek számomra nincs sok értelme, tekintve, hogy mindenki úgyis Zeneakadémiának hívja, még a weboldalukon is - de nyilván volt valami okuk arra, hogy megváltoztassák.

Built in art deco style between 1904-07, designed by Floris Korb and Kalman Giergl. The great hall seats 1200, and is still counted amongst the best acoustics concert rooms in Hungary. It sounds indeed great!
Szecessziós stílusban épült 1904-07 között, Korb Flóris és Giergl Kálmán tervei alapján. A nagyterem 1200 főt fogad be, és még mindig Magyarország egyik legjobb akusztikájú koncertterme. Tényleg nagyon jól szól!

As I write this, I think of a couple of musicians I would love to hear there - shall I tell you who?
Ahogy ezt írom, gondolok néhány zenészre, akiket szívesen hallanék itt - elmondjam, kiket?

Old house in Pest

I have posted here a picture of an old district with some houses that really need a face lift. This is how one of them looks from inside. Isn't it worth to save it?

Old district

Well, I am in Budapest now, arrived yesterday. (Will have some concerts and such, pop by if you are around!)
Nos, Budapesten vagyok, tegnap érkeztem. (Lesz néhány fellépésem, gyere el, ha erre jársz!)

I stay here in a cosy little appartement. There are areas in the city that have been badly neglected but recently they started renovations all over the place. Huge projects everywhere.
Egy helyes kis lakásban lakom. A városnak vannak olyan részei, amelyeket rettentően elhanyagoltak, de nemrégiben mindenfelé megkezdődtek a felűjítások. Óriási projektek.

I wonder if they will heal these ones, for they could be very nice with a full facelift, or they just tear them down:
Kíváncsi vagyok, hogy ezeket a házakat vajon meggyógyítják-e, mert nagyon szépek lennének egy teljes kozmetikával, vagy egyszerűen ledózerolják őket:

Nyugati

As you walk on from the McDonald's, you get to the Nyugati Pályaudvar(Western Railway Station), which people just call Nyugati.
Ahogy továbbsétálunk a McDonald's-tól, a Nyugati pályaudvarhoz érünk, amit csak Nyugatinak hívnak.

Whenever possible, I try to avoid fast food places, but this is the most beautiful McDonalds in Budapest - or maybe on the world?
Amikor csak lehetséges, igyekszem elkerülni a gyorséttermeket - de ez a McDonalds a legszebb Budapesten - vagy talán az egész világon?

At the Blaha

At the Blaha (Blaha Lujza tér), in the heart of Budapest, amongst trams, subway, cars, neon billboards, boring modern office buildings, one can find real treasure, like the New York Cafe.
A Blahán, Budapest szívében, villamosok, metró, autók, neon hirdetőtáblák és unalmas modern irodaházak között igazi kincsekre is bukkanhatunk, mint a New York Kávéház.

Another nice building is actually used as an office building, some authority, I forgot what.
Egy másik szép épületet valójában irodaépületként használnak, valamilyen hatóság, elfelejtettem, micsoda.

Lamp by Henrik Fazola

On my recent trip to Hungary, I was running to a lot to different offices, for doing a lot of paperwork. Well, this is not something you would like to do on your holiday, but...
Mostani magyarországi látogatásom során rengeteg papírdolog után rohangáltam. Nos, ez nem olyasmi, amit az ember szívesen csinál a vakációja során, de...

This way I had the opportunity to go into buildings otherwise I would never see.
Így megvolt arra is a lehetőségem, hogy olyan épületekben járjak, amiket máskülönben nem látnék.

Grand Synagogue

The Grand Synagogue in downtown Budapest (at the beginning of Dohany utca, between Astoria and Deak ter) is the largest one in Europe and second in the world, after the Emanuel Synagogue in New York.
A Budapest belvarosaban, (a Dohany utca elejen) levo Nagy Zsinagoga Europaban a legnagyobb, a vilagon pedig a 2. legnagyobb, a New York-i Emanuel Zsinagoga utan.

I took this night picture in the same day as the ones in my previous posts. Just waiting for the trolley-bus, going to a tanchaz...
Ezt az ejszakai kepet ugyanazon a napon keszitettem, mint az elozo bejegyzesben levoket. Trolira varva, tanchazba menet...

Deák tér

Walking on from the Bazilika in downtown Budapest, we get to a big square, Deák tér. Named after Ferenc Deák who was one of the greatest Hungarian politicians of all times, in the 19th century.

By the way, the biggest banknote in Hungary today, 20.000 Forint carries his portrait.

That's where all the subway lines meet and you can change from one to another.

Szent István Bazilika - Saint Stephen's Basilica

In the 5th district, the hearth of Budapest, there is a very spacious square where you fcan't miss the Szent István Bazilika - Saint Stephen's Basilica.

We come out from the street where you saw these two nice houses and there it is, a huge monument.

Here you can even see the building of my previous post in the corner of the picture:





In the brochures, I didn't read anything about those two numbers you can see on the facade, but as it was year 2006, 1456 must represent the battle of Nándorfehérvár (today: Belgrade) where the Hungarians beat the Turks and so stopped them from their intent to invade the Christian Europe. And 1956 - well, one can find a lot of material about the Hungarian revolution of that year.

Metró - the subway in Budapest

It was renovated not long ago. I hope it stays nice.

The Arena

This is not a giant discman - it's the big sports arena in Budapest, named after László Papp.

The Place for big concerts (like Tori Amos or Michale Bolton coming soon), matches Like Hungary-Sweden icehockey just now on Thursday), fairs and other events (like the 26th National Táncház Festival and Craft Market this coming weekend).

It was built 4 years ago, after the old one burned down in 1999.
